The ScubaPro Gorilla Frameless mask is an attractive, low-profile mask made from a durable silicone. This mask was designed to provide a better seal for larger faces.

The extra-large, single window increases the field of view while the frameless design improves the seal of the mask, especially as a diver breaks the mask in. The nose pocket was designed to fit wider noses, and is stiffer in design and feel than other comparable brands.

The wide strap on this mask makes it feel comfortable and secure to the wearer. Additionally, the straps are extremely easy to adjust, even while wearing gloves.

Let’s dive into our review of the ScubaPro Gorilla Frameless mask.

Things we like:

  • Sleek look and matte finish makes this mask look professional
  • Large single window
  • Durable skirt
  • Strap easy to adjust while wearing gloves
  • Seals nicely to face as depth increases without mask squeeze

Things we don't like:

  • Rigid nose pocket
  • Can be difficult to clear
  • Some leaking occurs for divers with a narrow face
  • Difficult to prep and must scrub several times before diving or mask fogs

No Frame Needed

The frameless design of the ScubaPro Gorilla Frameless mask eliminates the traditional plastic or metal frame around the lenses, reducing the mask’s weight and creating a low profile.

The frameless design also keeps the mask compact, making it easy to stow and transport. This can be especially beneficial for divers who want to minimize bulk. In addition to the low-profile design, the Gorilla mask has a single window that allows divers to have a wider, clear view of their surroundings.

The low profile of the ScubaPro Gorilla Frameless mask creates low internal volume between the mask and a diver’s face. Masks with a low internal volume require less effort to clear and equalize, making them more comfortable for dives at various depths.

However, the shape of the lens in the ScubaPro Gorilla Frameless mask can make it difficult to clear out the last bit of water that can become trapped in the bottom of the window.

While testing, the mask did fog up some, even after a thorough scrub with toothpaste to remove the protective coating that comes on new masks. This mask takes a little more time, and scrubbing, to break in compared to other masks. However, once broken in, it is a high-performing mask.

Durable Mask Design

The matte black finish and the single window makes for a streamlined look.
The matte black finish and the single window makes for a streamlined look.

Low-profile masks, like the Gorilla Frameless, look sleek on your face. Overall, this is a very professional and high-quality mask in both appearance and design. The matte black finish and the single window makes for a streamlined look—no frills, just performance.

The silicone of the mask skirt is superior quality, making it a durable mask that is designed to last. ScubaPro designed the Gorilla Frameless to offer a better fit for larger framed faces, and may be best suited for wider or round face shapes.

Sealing Skirt and Large Nose Pocket

The large nose pocket offers a great fit for divers with medium to large faces.
The large nose pocket offers a great fit for divers with medium to large faces.

The ScubaPro Gorilla Frameless mask skirt is made of a durable silicone that claims to provide a better seal to the face. The deeper you go, the more it hugs to your face. However, the silicone is more on the rigid side, so it may not be best for divers with sensitive skin.

This mask offers a better fit for medium- to large-sized faces. One of the top features for divers with larger facial features is the large nose pocket. Because it is more rigid in design, divers with smaller noses may have difficulty equalizing. However, divers with a wider or larger nose seem to have an easier time equalizing in this mask. Additionally, divers with mustaches have reported that the Gorilla Frameless offers a nice fit.

The skirt is generally comfortable, though the silicone is more rigid than comparable TUSA masks like the Freedom HD and Paragon, which also provide a better fit for larger faces. However, the skirt of the Gorilla Frameless mask did not extend as far up the forehead as the TUSA masks, and has a sleeker design.

Easy-to-Adjust Buckle System

The ScubaPro Gorilla Frameless buckle system is easy to adjust, even with gloves on.
The ScubaPro Gorilla Frameless buckle system is easy to adjust, even with gloves on.

The ScubaPro Gorilla Frameless buckle system is easy to adjust, even with gloves on. The ease of adjustment was similar to other masks, including the Cressi A1 and the TUSA Paragon mask.

One of the best features of this mask is the wide split strap. This comfortable design reduces tension and provides a secure and snug fit.

Price/quality ratio

The ScubaPro Gorilla Frameless mask is at a higher price point compared to similar single-lens masks, but it’s often worth spending a bit more to find the best fit. Divers seeking a mask that will look and feel high performance, while also providing a better seal for larger faces, will find that the Gorilla is a great option.

Do we recommend the ScubaPro Gorilla Frameless mask?

We do recommend the ScubaPro Gorilla Frameless mask for scuba divers with larger faces. Overall, the Gorilla Frameless performed well, however there was some leaking and fogging.

This mask may need a breaking in period to provide optimum performance. Make sure to thoroughly scrub the protective coating when this mask is new and prior to the first dive to minimize fogging.
