For many European divers, the Red Sea needs no introduction. It’s simply one of the best diving destinations within easy reach of Europe. For the uninitiated, the Red Sea has so many fans for many reasons—beautiful reefs teeming with marine life big and small, a good chance to encounter pelagic species such as tuna, trevallies, and different types of sharks. Plus, for the history buffs, there are plenty of shipwrecks in the area.

Diving from the MY Blue Seas allows you to discover everything the Red Sea has to offer in style. One of the larger boats of the Blue Planet fleet, this liveaboard offers space for up to 24 divers and is open for charters or individual bookings.

Itineraries cover some of the Red Sea’s most sought-after locations, including combinations of wrecks and reefs or trips focused on one or the other.

Read on for our detailed review of the MY Blue Seas.

Diving on the MY Blue Seas liveaboard

The MY Blue Seas covers all Red Sea routes from north to south, offering divers a chance to choose between the splendid marine life of the southern marine parks and the classic combination of northern wrecks and reefs.

The crew works hard to fit up to 21 dives into the 7-night safari itineraries, with divers completing up to four dives per day, except on their first and last days onboard. Choosing the northern wrecks and reefs itinerary gives divers a chance to visit the famed SS Thistlegorm wreck, considered to be one of the world’s top 10 wreck dives.

This British cargo ship fell victim to a German bomber unit during WWII. Its cargo is still visible, and divers can see trucks, motorcycles, airplane parts, and much more. The wreck is also frequented by plenty of marine life, and it’s not unusual to see tuna, barracuda, and turtles on the Thistlegorm.

Heading for the reefs and marine parks, divers’ chances of encountering large pelagic species increase. Think hammerhead sharks, oceanic whitetip sharks, and even thresher sharks.

Diving off the MY Blue Seas starts from a spacious diving deck offering plenty of room for 24 divers. There is also space for gear storage and for kitting up. Underwater photographers will love the dedicated rinse stations for their cameras and underwater lights. The boat also offers a charging area that ensures cameras, dive lights, and other pieces of gear are ready for the next dive.

Some of the itineraries require divers to have a certain amount of diving experience because conditions can be a bit more challenging, including strong currents. If you’re a diver with limited experience, check that you meet the requirements before booking.

Highlights:

  • Large dive deck ready to accommodate 24 divers
  • Wide choice of 7-night itineraries catering to different levels of dive experience
  • Up to 21 dives per trip

Onboard the MY Blue Seas

The MY Blue Seas casts an impressive figure both as you approach it from the sea after a dive and when you first set foot onboard. At 138 feet (42 m) long, this is one of the larger boats of the Blue Planet fleet, allowing divers to travel in comfort and style.

Any trip on this boat starts with a briefing on arrival, and the first evening is normally spent in port before the trip gets underway on the following morning. This is a great opportunity to meet fellow divers and marvel at the interiors. The boat’s walls and other furnishings have been finished in matching walnut wood, with floors decorated with inlaid maple and teak.

This decor continues throughout the MY Blue Seas’ 12 cabins, all of which are equipped with AC, ensuite hot-water bathrooms, and TVs. Eight cabins are located on the lower deck, including the master suite which is the largest of the liveaboard’s cabins and equipped with a comfortable double bed. There is plenty of storage space for personal items, too.

The lower deck is also home to seven twin cabins, which are ideal for sharing. All lower deck cabins receive some natural light thanks to portholes. If you prefer more natural light in your cabin or would like to wake up to stunning Red Sea sunrises, consider booking an upper-deck cabin instead.

The MY Blue Seas has four cabins on the upper deck, all of which enjoy excellent sea views. There are two double and two twin cabins here, giving divers plenty of options to choose from.

Heading outside of your cabin, you will find plenty of partially shaded relaxation spaces on the sundeck. Whether you prefer to top up your tan or would rather relax in the shade, there is a suitable area for you on this boat. In addition, there is also a large salon for anyone looking to cool off in an air-conditioned space.

Highlights:

  • Four sea-view cabins on the upper deck
  • Large master suite on the lower deck
  • Great choice of relaxation spaces

Dining on the MY Blue Seas

The welcome dinner on your first night on board sets the tone for the week, and the culinary team ensures that no one goes hungry during their week exploring the Red Sea. The team serves three buffet-style main meals per day, featuring a combination of Western favorites and tasty Egyptian dishes.

There are generally plenty of vegetarian options, but it’s worth inquiring ahead of time if you have more specific dietary requirements. An unlimited supply of snacks throughout the day is also included in the trip price, as are coffee, tea, water, and bottled soft drinks. The MY Blue Seas offers local beers, a selection of fine wines, and diet soft drinks for purchase.

  • Tasty buffet-style meals featuring Egyptian and Western dishes

I was on the trip Daedalus/Fury Shoals August 19-26-2021.
The boat is very spacious and clean, staff is helpful and friendly. Dive guides are very passive. There is no improvisation on diving guide/diving sites whatsoever. I requested to change dive guides but was not allowed. Food is boring, dry or not cooked well enough. Afternoon snack is not worth mentioning. My vegetarian request was not considered. Airco in dining/briefing area affects diving due to cold.
