Philippines diving packs a punch no matter where and when you go. Take the island province of Palawan, for example. With 1,800 islands fringed by coral reefs, UNESCO World Heritage sites, and the shipwrecks of Coron island, there is no shortage of dive sites in this area.

Plus, most of the itineraries in the area allow dive operators to combine dives spent searching for pelagics with sites specializing in tiny creatures. Great hammerhead sharks are only one species you may see, and there is also a chance to dive with manta rays.

The Navis 1 liveaboard offers divers one of the most comfortable and stable ways to explore these islands. The catamaran features nine cabins and provides more space than most other liveaboards in the area. Itineraries vary depending on the season to ensure divers experience favorable conditions and have the best chance of encountering the species they’re looking for most. Destinations include Tubbataha and Apo Reefs, El Nido, and Coron.

Read on for our overview of the Navis 1 liveaboard.

Diving on the Navis 1 liveaboard

The Navis 1 visits world-renowned dive spots in Palawan, including the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Tubbataha reef. Tubbataha can only be reached by liveaboard and has a short but spectacular diving season. Divers have a chance to encounter more than 1,200 species here. Hammerheads and other shark species, eagle rays, sea turtles, and hundreds of different reef fish are just part of the experience.

The Philippines are just as well known for outstanding macro diving, and on many of the Navis 1’s itineraries, divers can encounter both. If your itinerary includes Coron, you will also be able to dive into history and explore WWII shipwrecks.

This liveaboard stands out from its competition because of the space it offers guests. That theme continues with the dive deck. Before every dive, divers meet in the comfortable briefing room to learn more about the conditions and the species they’re likely to encounter.

The deck offers plenty of space for all 18 divers to get ready at the same time and to store their gear in between dives. The entire area is shaded, allowing you to take your time to get ready. Once divers are kitted up, they board tenders to drop them in the perfect spot for each dive.

After each dive, the shady dive deck is the perfect place to debrief. The deck also has convenient rinse hoses that make it easy to maintain your gear. Underwater photographers will love the dedicated camera room which is perfect for preparing, cleaning, and looking after camera gear.

The hardest decision divers will have to make is when to visit. The Navis 1 changes itineraries depending on seasons. Tubbataha National Park, for example, can only be dived between March and June.

Wreck diving fans would be well advised to pick a time that offers the best possible conditions for the Coron area. Having said that, each itinerary offers opportunities to experience pristine reefs and see unparalleled diversity.

Highlights:

  • One of the most spacious dive decks in the area
  • Dedicated camera and briefing rooms
  • Great choice of itineraries in a world-class destination

Onboard the Navis 1

As the only Philippines liveaboard with a twin hull, the Navis 1 offers one of the most comfortable journeys in terms of stability and space. The boat features nine cabins, all of which are located on the main and upper decks. Each cabin features large windows and spectacular views of the surrounding islands.

All cabins are also equipped with individual AC and ensuite bathrooms, including complimentary toiletries. Twin cabins feature two separate beds with generous under-bed storage, while the liveaboard’s double cabins each have a queen-size bed with under-bed storage. What we love the most, though, are the tribal wall decorations featuring marine life.

The shared spaces on this vessel are just as inviting. If you need a break from the sun, head to the indoor lounge which is just perfect for sharing stories of the day’s dives. It’s also a great place to share your underwater footage or simply watch a movie.

Perhaps the greatest social space on this catamaran is its roof deck. There is ample seating for sunbathing and stargazing, and a well-stocked bar invites divers to toast their marine life encounters at the end of a packed diving day.

For those who are taking a break from diving or want to spend a little time on rather than under the water, there are stand-up paddle boards and kayaks. The itineraries are snorkeler-friendly, too.

Highlights:

  • Every cabin has sweeping ocean views
  • Outstanding roof deck with a well-stocked bar

Dining on the Navis 1

Dining on the Navis 1 is just as exceptional as you would expect from this unique liveaboard. The kitchen team serves buffet meals in the alfresco dining area on the rooftop, allowing divers to enjoy spectacular surroundings with every bite.

The team serves a combination of Western favorites and local dishes, including vegetarian dishes. The Navis 1 can also accommodate dietary requirements, although it’s recommended to let the team know well before your trip due to the remote locations. Land excursions offer opportunities for beach BBQs, too.

A steady supply of snacks throughout the day ensures that you never feel hungry, no matter how exciting the diving becomes. Throughout the day, divers can help themselves to free-flow drinking water, tea, and coffee. Drinks from the bar, soft drinks, beer, and wine are charged extra. Guests can also bring their own alcoholic drinks on board, but there will be a corkage charge.

Highlights:

  • Gourmet buffet-style meals served on the roof deck
  • Beach BBQs during land excursions
  • Rooftop bar
