You can’t talk about scuba diving in Egypt without talking about its colorful corals, stunning wrecks, dramatic wall dives, sharks, and excellent visibility. With such diverse dive sites, there’s no doubt that Egypt has some of the best diving in the world. And when you dive somewhere this nice, it’s only fitting that you’d look at the Amelie Safari liveaboard, which will take you to the more remote (and beautiful) dive sites in the Southern Red Sea region.

Accommodating only 12 guests, the Hurghada-based Amelie Safari offers intimate dive trips. This liveaboard also runs day trips and overnight excursions, so if you’ve never been on a liveaboard before, you can get a taste of the lifestyle before committing to longer itineraries. You can also hire Amelie Safari for private and personalized dive trips.

Keep reading as we dive into our review of Amelie Safari.

Diving on the Amelie Safari liveaboard

Scuba diving in Egypt falls into two main geographic areas: the north and south Red Sea. While the north is home to world-famous dive sites like the SS Thistlegorm and Ras Muhammad National Park, the southern sites are less crowded and have strong currents that attract bigger marine life. That’s why, for some itineraries, Amelie Safari asks that all guests have at least 30 logged dives.

Round trips from Hurghada include three main itineraries. The Best of Hurghada itinerary lasts four or eight days and is perfect for beginners, advanced divers, and photographers. You’ll explore the shallow lagoons, drop-offs, and coral gardens around Hurghada. Highlights include Shaab El Erg (Dolphin House) and the Ulysses wreck.

Another itinerary is the Best of Fury Shoals. This one is best suited to experienced divers and includes the famous Elphinstone Reef, Fury Shoals, and Daedalus Reef. You can expect to see lots of sharks, dolphins, and healthy coral growth.

Amelie Safari also does overnight liveaboard trips, ideal for divers who want to reach the more remote dive sites without committing to a longer stay onboard. With the same reasoning, there are also day trips available that include two or three dives and lunch. There are also dedicated one-week kite surfing trips.

For the ultimate in luxury, you can privately hire Amelie Safari and personalize your itinerary. If that’s not in the budget, you can also hire a private dive guide to enjoy dives at your own pace and take time for photos. Those who want to improve their underwater photography skills can also splurge on private underwater photography training, which includes private guided dives.

All dives are done from the back of the boat or tenders. Regardless of the itinerary, you can expect to do two or three dives per day and one night dive. Diving with nitrox is free for those with certification.

The Amelie Safari is also suitable for snorkelers. If you want to get scuba certified, the staff offers a range of PADI diving courses, including the Discover Scuba experience, Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Emergency First Response, and a few specialty courses.

Rental gear is not included in the cost of the trip.

Highlights:

  • Southern Red Sea diving
  • Free nitrox
  • Overnight liveaboard trips
  • Private guided dives and underwater photography training for a fee

Onboard the Amelie Safari

Built in 1995, Amelie Safari was renovated in 2019 to be a simple yet comfortable liveaboard, welcoming only 12 guests. The small size of the boat allows the staff to deliver attentive customer service, which includes complimentary airport/hotel pick up and drop off.

There are six double cabins located on the lower deck. Each cabin has twin bunk beds, storage space, a private bathroom, air conditioning, and porthole windows.

The main deck has an indoor salon and dining area. It’s a social area with a library,  audio and video entertainment, and a drinks station. Wi-Fi is included in the price of the trip.

At the front and the back of the upper deck is a sun lounge area with padded benches, mattresses, and bean bags where you can catch a few rays and relax between dives. In the middle, there’s a shaded area with a table and a wraparound bench. The top deck is another open-air sun lounge with more mattresses.

The dive deck is on the main deck at the back of the boat. It’s rather basic, but it has everything you need: benches to get kitted up, hangers for your dive gear, a dive platform, and a camera station.
