Are you dreaming of getting away from your desk and being surrounded by nothing but the deep blue sea? The Red Sea may be just what you’re looking for. Home to outstanding coral reefs—some of which rival those in the Coral Triangle of Southeast Asia— historic wartime wrecks, and pelagic species like hammerhead sharks, there is something here for everyone.

And while Red Sea resorts have built a reputation for offering affordable, family-friendly diving within a short flight of Europe, exploring this area by liveaboard has its advantages. First and foremost, you can escape the crowds and explore some of the best-known dive sites all by yourself.

The MY Blue is a great base from which to explore the Red Sea. Built in 2016, the MY Blue is one of the larger ones in the region at 141 feet (43 m) long and nearly 30 feet (9 m) wide. This boat has plenty of space for 24 divers in 12 cabins.

Divers can choose itineraries covering crowd favorites such as the Thistlegorm wreck in the north or head further afield to the marine parks of Zabargad, Daedalus, or the Brothers Islands.

Read on for our in-depth review of the MY Blue liveaboard.

Diving on the MY Blue liveaboard

This liveaboard was designed by divers with divers in mind—just take one look at the spacious dive deck and you can imagine 24 divers easily preparing for their next adventure.

All dives start from dedicated zodiacs, and nitrox is included in the trip price for qualified divers. Depending on your chosen itinerary, you can look forward to completing between three and four dives per day.

As a rule, the boat completes three dives per day inside marine parks and up to four when cruising in other parts of the Red Sea. On the first full day, divers will likely complete two to three dives as their journey gets underway. On the last day, the crew generally plans for two dives.

What’s there to see? The answer to that question depends on where you go. Northern reefs and wrecks have long been a classic itinerary in the Red Sea, allowing divers to combine marine life with dives on the historic SS Thistlegorm and Salem Express. Those trips are open to anyone with 20 dives.

If you plan to head to the southern reefs of St. John’s, having 30 dives is recommended. For the marine parks of the Brothers Islands, Daedalus, Rocky, and Zabargad, the crew recommends a minimum of 50 dives as conditions can become more challenging. Don’t worry, though, each dive is preceded by a thorough site briefing, ensuring everyone knows exactly what to expect from the dive ahead.

Highlights:

  • Wide choice of itineraries, including marine parks and historic wrecks
  • Year-round destination, though be aware of temperature changes
  • Dedicated zodiacs for easy dive site transfers

Onboard the MY Blue

Step on the MY Blue and into your week of luxury liveaboard diving. This is the largest ship of the Blue Planet fleet, and it combines the benefits of modern European design with the knowledge of Egyptian shipbuilding.

Choose between three different types of cabins. All are equipped with ensuite bathrooms, air conditioning, entertainment systems, and plenty of storage space for your clothes. If you want to travel in style, look no further than the master cabin on the main deck, which is 25% larger than the remaining 11 cabins.

If you’re not too worried about space, consider the sea-view cabins. All four of them are located on the upper deck, treating you to similarly spectacular views as the master cabin. Two seaview cabins have single beds, making them ideal for sharing between friends, while the other two feature a double bed each.

On the lower deck, there are seven standard twin cabins. On some liveaboards, those cabins would be relatively dark, but the MY Blue uses innovative light shaft technology to ensure that every guest can enjoy their time in their cabin.

Should you prefer to relax elsewhere between your dives, you’ll be spoiled for choice. Sun worshippers will love the spacious sundecks, complete with cushioned lounge chairs. Some of these spaces offer shade as well, perfect for napping or even a bit of remote work if you must. Those who prefer air conditioning will enjoy the salon, which features a state-of-the-art entertainment system and a wide choice of movies to choose from.

Depending on your itinerary, you may also have the opportunity to explore on land and enjoy fishing or snorkeling.

Highlights:

  • Innovative light shaft technology allows natural light into lower deck cabins
  • Opportunities for land excursions
  • Plenty of sundeck space for 24 divers

Dining on the MY Blue

Undoubtedly, diving leaves you hungry, and enjoying delicious meals on board is one of the highlights of their trip for many divers.

The culinary team of the MY Blue serves a combination of Western and traditional Egyptian dishes that will have most divers coming back for seconds. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served buffet-style in the air-conditioned dining area. While the dishes vary, all meals have one thing in common – divers will be spoiled for choice. In fact, the variety and the quality of the food regularly have divers raving about this boat.

Between meals, snacks are always available. The trip price also includes Nescafe, tea, drinking water, and soft drinks. Those wishing to toast their dives with something stronger will enjoy the boat’s bar, which stocks beer, local wine, and mixers for purchase.

Highlights:

  • Outstanding choice of buffet-style food served three times a day
  • Well-stocked bar offering alcoholic drinks at an additional cost
