The Maldives offer some of the most exciting pelagic encounters that divers can dream of. Swim with manta rays; encounter different shark species; and marvel at the size and grace of whale sharks. On the surface, dolphins regularly entertain divers during surface intervals.

Underwater, there is never a dull moment either. See hammerhead sharks, eagle rays, schooling snappers, giant trevallies—the list goes on. And we haven’t even started talking about the corals, fans, and sponges yet. Some of the dive sites can have moderate to strong currents, giving divers an even greater chance of these pelagic encounters.

The Blue Voyager may be one of the latest additions to the Master Liveaboards fleet, but this vessel and its crew have spent several years in the Maldives getting to know the best dive spots around the atolls.

The Blue Voyager welcomes up to 26 divers in 13 cozy, comfortable cabins, but the boat’s star feature is no doubt the ocean deck. At night, floodlights from the deck illuminate the water to attract plankton and encourage manta rays and whale sharks to come close and feed. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience.

Let’s dive into our review of the Blue Voyager.

Diving on the Blue Voyager liveaboard

The Blue Voyager takes liveaboard diving in style to another level. Rather than using a dive deck, the Blue Voyager features a custom-built dhoni, a diving support vessel called the Blue Shadow.

The main deck of the Blue Shadow houses gear stations for every single diver, allowing guests to keep their equipment, including cameras, ready for the next dive. There are showers on deck as well as separate camera and equipment rinse tanks, and the dhoni crew is happy to lend a helping hand whenever necessary. By the time divers return to the main boat after their dive, their equipment has already been taken care of.

The dhoni is also equipped with two compressors and a membrane system to supply nitrox (at an additional charge). Finally, to make the journey to and from dive sites more comfortable, divers can take advantage of the sundeck right on the dhoni.

What’s more, the Blue Voyager welcomes sidemount divers and can cater to rebreather divers, given prior notice. The boat also offers diving courses and gear rental. For both, it’s worth contacting the team well ahead of your trip, and they will incur additional charges.

What can you expect from diving here? Turquoise waters, plenty of pelagic encounters, and current-swept reefs make the Maldives one of the world’s most sought-after diving destinations.

Visibility is best in the winter months, and some dive sites can have strong currents, which is something most pelagic species love. In any case, no matter which itinerary divers choose, it’s impossible to be disappointed by dives in these waters.

Highlights:

  • Pelagic diving at its best
  • Custom-built, large diving dhoni for ultimate diver comfort

Onboard the Blue Voyager

Step onto this 121-foot (37 m) liveaboard and let your Maldives adventure begin! There are plenty of indoor and outdoor spaces to allow you to travel in comfort and safety while taking in the beautiful atoll scenery around you.

Starting with the cabins, the Blue Voyager welcomes a maximum of 26 divers in 13 cabins spread out over three decks. All are equipped with AC, hot water, ensuite bathrooms, and entertainment systems. Classic twin cabins are located on the lower deck and are ideal for sharing. Classic double cabins are on the middle deck.

The three premium cabins are ideal for anyone looking to treat themselves on their Maldives adventure. Situated on the upper decks, they are not only more spacious than their classic counterparts, but these cabins also offer fabulous views. That means you never have to miss any of the sea life sightings or the stunning atolls the boat travels past.

Common areas include four sundecks for relaxation and topping up your tan. If you’re craving more in-water time, there is also a hot tub onboard. However, our highlight is the ocean deck where crew and guests gather after dark to watch whale sharks and manta rays hunt their prey.

Highlights:

  • Three premium cabins with stunning views
  • Flood-lit ocean deck to draw in whale sharks and manta rays hunting after dark
  • Four spacious sundecks for relaxation

Dining on the Blue Voyager

No luxury cruising and diving experience in the Indian Ocean would be complete without outstanding food. The crew of the Blue Voyager serves a delicious combination of Western food and local, Maldivian dishes in the comfortable, air-conditioned indoor dining space. There is an outdoor BBQ area, too, to help the chef prepare some of the most popular meals of each trip.

All meals are served buffet-style, allowing guests to help themselves. Beer and fine wines are available for purchase from the bar, making it easy to toast those amazing pelagic encounters.

Anyone feeling hungry in between dives can help themselves to an endless supply of snacks, too. The Blue Voyager team also offers vegetarian options, and the crew is happy to accommodate other dietary requirements. As always, it is worth letting the agent know at the time of booking.
