World-famous shipwrecks, current-swept pinnacles, beautiful reefs teeming with life—all these attributes make the Red Sea a firm favorite with divers. This is a great place to dive with oceanic whitetip sharks, observe batfish circling historic shipwrecks, and still marvel at some of the strange macro life hiding in between the corals on the reef.

What better way to take in all this beauty than from one of the newest liveaboard boats in the area? The MY Blue Storm was launched in 2021, in the middle of the pandemic. Rather than putting this new vessel “on ice,”  owners Blue Planet Liveaboards decided to finish building this 131-foot (40 m) vessel and launch just as soon as divers could return to Egypt.

Today, the MY Blue Storm has space for 24 divers and offers trips to all corners of the Red Sea.

Read on for our in-depth review of the MY Blue Storm.

Diving on the MY Blue Storm liveaboard

As you would expect from a relatively new boat, the MY Blue Storm has a spacious dive deck, allowing up to 24 divers to get ready in comfort. The crew is well-versed in handling the transition to zodiacs and dropping divers in exactly the right place.

Depending on your chosen itinerary, you may complete up to 21 dives during your time onboard. Divers generally complete two or three dives on the first and two dives on the last day. On all other days, three to four dives are on offer.

Exact numbers depend on conditions and your chosen itinerary. The MY Blue Storm offers the classic northern reefs and wrecks trip that allows you to dive into pieces of history such as the world-famous SS Thistlegorm shipwreck on the same day as exploring beautiful reefs.

Other itineraries head to the Brothers Islands, Elphinstone, or Daedalus Reef, increasing your chances of encountering hammerhead sharks or diving with oceanic whitetip sharks.

On deep south itineraries to St. Johns and Fury Shoals, divers get a chance to explore overhangs and cavernous spaces, all surrounded by clear blue water. Choosing an itinerary may be the hardest part of the booking process.

The dive deck itself is large enough for each diver to have his own dedicated area to get ready for the next dive and store gear in between dives. Nitrox is included in the trip price for those already certified, and courses are available for anyone who wants to get certified on board.

Highlights:

  • Large dive deck with dedicated spaces for 24 divers
  • Wrecks, sharks, and caverns are all covered by different itineraries
  • Up to 21 dives per trip

 Onboard the MY Blue Storm

This modern yacht is the latest addition to the Blue Planet fleet of liveaboards. Its design really focuses on offering divers as much comfort and space as possible within the confines of a dive boat. Like other liveaboards in the fleet, the MY Blue Storm has beautiful wooden floors and finishings, adding a touch of character to this steel ship.

Eleven cabins spread across three decks accommodate up to 24 divers. All cabins have air-conditioning and ensuite bathrooms with warm water. Each cabin also has some natural light, either through portholes or full-size windows.

Divers will find five twin cabins on the lower deck. Two of those lower-deck cabins can be converted into triple cabins, making them ideal for families or friends wanting to share their accommodation. Space does become limited, though, with three people in these cabins. All lower-deck cabins have portholes.

Moving further up, on the main deck there are two twin and two double cabins. Compared to the lower-deck accommodations, these cabins offer stunning sea views, allowing you to wake up to the sunrise over the Red Sea. On the upper deck, there are two additional double cabins with equally large windows as the main deck cabins.

In addition, there are plenty of relaxation spaces to choose from outside of the cabins. The sundeck has been designed to offer places for sun worshippers as well as plenty of options for those seeking shade. On colder days, divers will also find shelter from the wind. Plenty of bean bags here make it easy to get comfortable.

If you prefer to recharge indoors in between dives, you will find plenty of space in the salon, which is also home to the boat’s dining area. Much of the main deck and the upper deck also feature large balconies, making it even easier to catch the best views of reefs and islands throughout the trip.

Highlights:

  • Total of six sea-view cabins across two decks
  • Family-friendly—two of the twin cabins can be converted into triples
  • Excellent variety of relaxation spaces

Dining on the MY Blue Storm

Completing up to four dives per day would make anyone hungry, and the MY Blue Storm’s kitchen crew works hard to serve up tasty meals three times a day.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served in the main indoor dining area. Buffet-style main meals allow divers to help themselves to as much food as they like and choose from a wide variety of Western and local Egyptian dishes. In between meals, there is an endless supply of snacks, making sure no diver has to descend hungry.

The team can also accommodate specific requests and a variety of dietary requirements, but it’s worth letting the operators know at the time of booking to ensure supplies are onboard.

The price of the cruise includes unlimited tea, coffee, water, and bottled soft drinks. If you would like to toast a successful diving day with something different, the crew offers local beers and fine wines for sale. Diet soft drinks are also available for purchase.

Highlights:

  • Delicious combination of Egyptian and Western dishes served buffet-style
