Where to buy

Not many people immediately think of Spyderco when they think of diving, but everybody thinks of quality when they think about Spyderco. For over four decades, Spyderco has been a leader in the cutlery industry. Hunters, fishers, hikers, backpackers, and campers have known for years that Spyderco knives are sharp, strong, and dependable.

We recommend you check their line of knives out for diving as well. Made from stainless steel and a fiberglass reinforced nylon handle, the Spyderco Salt 2 can handle the toughest saltwater you can throw at it. Plus, it’s small enough to fit anywhere you want to stash it, and strong enough to count on when the time comes.

Let’s dive in and take a closer look at the Spyderco Salt 2 Dive Knife.

Spyderco Salt 2 Spec Breakdown & Features

Lightweight at 1.9 ounces, the Spyderco Salt 2 can fit in just about any pocket or attach to any clip without feeling off-balance. We would consider the Salt 2 a medium-length knife, measuring 7.2 inches when open and in use. It does fold down to 4.25 inches, which saves room.

You can order a Salt 2 with either a straight edge or a SpyderEdge (serrated). Both edges are extremely sharp out of the box. The blade is made from LC200N stainless steel. Regardless of the edge, the Salt 2 comes with a pointed tip. The blade measures right at 3 inches, and the handle is made from fiberglass-reinforced nylon, or FRN.

Spyderco Salt 2 Impressions

I absolutely love Spyderco knives. I won’t go into the outdoors without one. I feel like that kid that survived after a plane crash with just a hatchet, but I feel like I could do that with just a Spyderco knife. But I went into this review like I had never even heard of the brand. A lot of people don’t know that they also make excellent dive knives, and that’s what we’re looking at here.

In our testing phase, the Salt 2 was easy to open and close with all but the thickest gloves. Even with big 7mm mittens it was easy to open, though it became slightly difficult to manipulate the closing mechanism. With a little pre-dive practice this could be an easier task.

As with all of the top-of-the-line knives we tested, the Salt 2 cut through anything we threw at it. Fishing line, 550 paracord, and even braided dock rope were no match for this knife. The version we tested had the straight edge and when I say that the cutting edge is second to none, I’m not lying.

The only brand I can compare it to is Benchmade. Both brands are top of the line and offer great knives. Check out our review of the Benchmade H2O for more.

The price is a little high for an accessory that you may not use on every dive, but if you ever get entangled or have to slice something in an emergency, you’re going to be glad you had the Salt 2 with you.

Do we recommend the Spyderco Salt 2 dive knife?

We certainly do recommend the Spyderco Salt 2 dive knife. Knives aren’t on the top of a lot of lists for divers to rush out and buy, but if you are set with all your other equipment you should absolutely rush out and buy the Salt 2.

Spyderco, while a little more expensive than other brands, is one of the world’s leading knife manufacturers. The Salt 2, not to mention their whole line of knives, will last you a lifetime.

If you love Spyderco as much as I do, and are interested in what we think makes the perfect daily use knife, check out our review of the Spyderco Native 5 Salt.

Sharp out of the box, with a choice between straight and SpyderEdge, the Salt 2 may just be one of the sharpest knives on the market. We recommend the Salt 2 for almost all divers, but primarily for those who are a bit more experienced multi-taskers. The Salt 2 is small and there may be a chance of dropping it if you’re not used to handling multiple tasks at the same time.

Finally, the old dive saying, “two is one, one is none” doesn’t just apply to torches—it’s good advice for knives as well. But since you don’t want to break the bank with a backup knife we recommend checking out the EEZYCUT Trilobite line cutter.
