Promate Barracuda Sharp Tip Titanium Spec Breakdown & Features

The Promate Barracuda Sharp Tip Titanium dive knife is a large knife, measuring a total of 10 inches (25.4 cm), half of which is the blade at 5 inches (12.7 cm.) and the other half in the self-measured handle. The length is balanced nicely in the 16 oz. (454 g) weight.

The titanium blade features both a straight and a serrated edge, as well as a line-cutter. You can get the Barracuda with either a pointed or blunt tip. The plastic handle with finger grooves and the plastic sheath fit nicely together; the knife is easily accessible, and goes back into the sheath with a tight grip.

If you’re a fan of large knives, another favorite of ours is the Benchmade Undercurrent. Sharp and featuring a Santoprene handle, it is a great all-around knife.

Promate Barracuda Sharp Tip Titanium Impressions

The Promate Sharp Tip Titanium knife is by far the largest knife we tested, so for me personally, it was a new experience. I mean, I’ve got kitchen knives that aren’t this big, and I’ve never used a big knife for diving purposes before.

I was pleasantly surprised at how balanced the Barracuda felt in my hand. The grip was quite ergonomic, and it didn’t feel heavy. I did feel a little like Rambo holding it though, and I almost broke out my old camo paint.

During our testing phase, the straight edge of the Barracuda cut nicely. It sliced the 550 paracord pretty easily and with a little effort it cut the braided-poly dock rope. The serrated edge was a different story. It struggled to cut the 550 cord, and I had to handle it like a hand-saw to even break into the braided rope.

The Barracuda was fairly easy to get in and out of the sheath, even while wearing thick gloves. The locking mechanism is set up so when you grab the handle of the knife, two small buttons on the side of the hilt are pressed and the knife is released. Even with the thick 7 mm mittens it was easy to use.

I would recommend the Barracuda to any diver who is used to a larger knife strapped to their calf. It’s longer than I like, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its place in the diving world. About the largest I would personally go is the Akona Talon, which is still on the larger side, but small enough to be manageable.

Do we recommend the Promate Barracuda Sharp Tip Titanium dive knife?

We do recommend the Promate Sharp Tip Titanium knife if you like large knives. It’s perfect for those who are used to strapping large knives to their calves. It’s not overly heavy, so it won’t make you feel unbalanced. This, along with the comfortable grip, and the easy-to-use locking mechanism means it’s easy to grab when you need it.

The straight cutting edge is sharp and can handle almost any cutting you need done. Being made from titanium, rust and corrosion are kept at bay. It will last you a long time and hold up to the tough conditions you throw at it.
