Professionalism in Paradise: the Diving

Mayan Divers, the resort’s PADI 5-Star Instructor Development Center, equips first timers, seasoned divers, and wannabe pros with everything needed for courses, day trips and deep-water explorations. The dive center was recently renovated to accommodate those with physical challenges, so all can enjoy Roatán’s underwater world. Mayan Divers is noted for its personalized service, knowledgeable staff, and small group sizes, giving its students and divers a constant sense of safety and confidence.

Adding to the sense of professionalism, Mayan Divers has a fleet of four dive boats, designed specifically for divers and snorkelers. Part of their custom-build is that they allow adaptive diving, with special beach wheelchairs to aid divers on board. The boats are moored up at the beach, so you can beeline for a beer as soon as you’re back on land.

The diving experience around Roatán is rich and varied, offering a mix of vibrant coral gardens, shipwrecks such as the El Aguila or the Odyssey, and thrilling encounters with marine life such as eagle rays. Seasonal migrations can also offer the rare chance to swim alongside majestic whale sharks, particularly between February and April. All of this combines to make Roatán a sought-after destination for divers.

The best conditions are typically May to September when the weather is calmer and underwater visibility is at its peak, often surpassing 100 feet (30 m). However, Roatán’s tropical climate allows for year-round diving. The wet season, from October to January, can see some choppiness and reduced visibility, but the waters remain dive-worthy, with the added benefit of fewer tourists and potentially more marine life interactions.

Green is the new Blue: Eco Practices

Even though it’s a relatively large island, Roatán is an island nonetheless and with that come sustainability issues, such as managing waste or coral reef preservation. To minimize the resort’s environmental footprint, Mayan Princess has eliminated single-use plastics and styrofoam containers, and installed rainwater collection irrigation systems.

To save on energy, guests will notice that all the lighting is LEDs, which have power-saving technologies in villas, meaning they are off when you’re out of the room.

The resort doesn’t stop at the beach—beyond its shoreline, Mayan Princess actively participates in coral restoration with Bay Islands Reef Restoration, supporting local efforts to replenish and protect Roatán’s coral reefs, crucial for maintaining the marine biodiversity that makes the island a renowned diving destination.

Through Bay Islands Reef Restoration program, Mayan Divers can educate guests and divemaster interns on important coral conservation initiatives and take part in coral nursery maintenance and coral outplanting.

Room for everyone: Accommodation

The Mayan Princess is a large resort with 60 rooms, which are split into eight different classifications of either one or two bedrooms and in two general locations, poolside or beachfront.

Keeping it simple is their smallest open-floor 225-square-foot deluxe studio, featuring a reasonably sized bathroom, a queen bed, a mini-fridge and coffee maker. There is also a poolside-facing terrace perfect for that morning joe or before-bed nightcap.

The next tier of rooms is the one-bedroom villas of 560-to-870 square-feet, accommodating two adults and two children. These include one king-size bed, a convertible queen-size sofa bed in the living room, and a dining room set for four guests. Families can take advantage of a fully functioning kitchen, which includes a fridge, electric stove, oven, and a coffee maker. All have a furnished balcony or patio, with pool or ocean views.

Finally, the two-bedroom villas range from 960 to 1390 square feet. The smallest is the family villa, which accommodates four adults or two adults and two children. The larger junior, poolside master, and beachfront master have two rooms and a sofa bed, fitting five adults or four adults and two children. These rooms also have fully equipped kitchens, furnished living rooms, and terraces.

Savor Every Moment: the Dining

With multiple restaurants and bars at the resort, guests will never go hungry or thirsty. Guests can choose between the all-inclusive family or premium plan, which offers unlimited food and drinks at either two or all four of the eateries. The premium package includes San Simon Beach Bar and the Caribbean Calkett, though if you’re not on the premium plan you’re still welcome at these restaurants, but will need to pay separately.

Balam is the resort’s only buffet restaurant, serving up infinite breakfast choices with freshly ground coffee, brewed to order. Every day there is a different menu of internationally themed favorites, such as Asian, Italian or Mexican, ensuring even the youngest guests remain excited about their meal options.

Staying with little ones, Macao is designed for families who perhaps have one or two picky eaters who miss the taste of home. Their menu’s motto is comfort food, with finger-licking dishes like pizza slices, hot dogs, and empanadas. Situated at the end of the lagoon pool, Macao is a great option for midday snacks and greasy hamburgers.

Casually nestled in between the resort and beachfront, Calkett restaurant has a cozy ambience and spectacular seafront views. Its menu boasts a selection of Caribbean-inspired dishes, crafted with local ingredients. Dishes include fresh ceviches, chowders, and their signature surf-and-turf Mayan combo of lobster tails, steak, and calamari. Be sure to book a table at sunset for the best view in town.

Still on the resort but surrounded by a white picket fence, San Simon is a popular island-wide hangout. White draped cabanas lead down from the bar to the beachfront, where wooden sofas with plush white pillows and azure loungers beckon for an afternoon nap.

If you’ve waiting to capture that perfect instagram shot, then now’s your chance. No holiday snap is complete without a colorful cocktail, so be sure to order up with the creative bartenders to really capture the essence of this ultimate beach destination.

Beyond Diving: Activities for Everyone

Roatán isn’t just about diving— this destination blends adventure, culture, and relaxation. Snorkeling along the nearby reefs provides a spectacular view of marine life without requiring a scuba certification, while paddleboarding and kayaking offer a peaceful way to explore the coastline.

Families with children can take advantage of The Pirate Kids’ Club, an included interactive program where young adventurers can engage in marine education, arts, and crafts. The club also organizes supervised beach activities, allowing parents to enjoy a worry-free dive or a leisurely afternoon by the pool.

Guests who prefer relaxation can visit Kakut Spa for soothing treatments or yoga sessions. In quiet sun loungers and private cabanas the sound of the waves provides the ultimate backdrop for unwinding.

The resort has two pools, Las Sirenas and the Mayan Princess. The latter is a large lagoon pool, starting just beyond the lobby, cruising through the resort and up to the main restaurants. Las Sirenas is the smaller pool, enclosed by the accommodation, and adjacent to the kid’s club.

How to Get There

The resort is only 25 minutes away from Juan Manuel Galvez International Airport, and transfers to/from the airport and ferry are included in the rates.

Roatán is a large tropical island, and there is plenty to discover beyond the resort. Water lovers should check out glass-bottom boats and deep-sea fishing trips. If you prefer to keep your feet on solid ground, visit animal parks like the Mayan Jungle Zoo Experience. And for something in between, zip-line through Gumbalimba Park’s lush canopy.

No matter what you and your crew look for in a holiday, the Mayan Princess offers a diverse array of dining options, bars, and lounge areas, catering to all characters and taste buds. From a PADI 5 Star dive shop to a relaxing spa, a well-stocked beach bar, and a large lagoon pool that’s ideal for cannonballs, you can be sure everyone will have a great time.
