Diving on your Doorstep

Off the beaten track and tucked away on Ambergris Caye, the Margaritaville beachfront is parallel to the Belize Barrier Reef. This 190-mile (300 km) dive paradise is but a section of the 560-mile-long (900 km) Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, which stretches past Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Belize. In other words, there is a lot of marine life and plenty of diving.
Their Dive & Activity Center is operated by PADI 5-star White Sands, a local dive shop. The diving is split into two tiers of packages—nearby and offshore. Local diving is within a 30 to 45-minute boat ride, ranging from 15 to 80 feet (5 to 25 m) and bursting with life, such as green turtles, manatees, and eagle rays.
These more mellow dive sites and conditions make Ambergris Caye a perfect place for anyone considering certification. Dive trips will often stop at the famous snorkeling spot Shark Ray Alley, where nurse sharks and southern stingray scooch up to you at the surface.
More advanced divers can choose to stay local or venture out on a full-day trip. The local Belize Barrier Reef has around 30 spots, many of which are 60 to 80 feet (18 to 25 m) deep canyons featuring interesting underwater formations, tunnels, dramatic drop-offs, and pinnacles. Here you’ll find a huge variety of marine life, including barracudas, wrasse, trumpetfish, sharks, cleaner shrimps, moray eels, turtles, butterflyfish, and big, beautiful soft corals swaying in the current. If you have an underwater camera, bring it.
For the ultimate Belizean bucket-list dive, serious divers should consider the Great Blue Hole. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a thrilling sapphire descent to over 100 feet (30 m), which then opens up into a wider cavern, decorated with stalactites and stalagmites 40 feet (12 m) long. The entire system is 480 feet deep and and dives past recreational limits are only suitable for those with technical training.

All suites are spacious with big bedrooms and kitchenettes, ideal for post-dive naps and snacks. Divers can easily accommodate bulky underwater cameras, and stow away even larger scuba luggage, a welcome convenience for many.
All the bungalows feature soothing whitewash with blue-turquoise accents and nautical decorations to bring that beachy vibe inside. Some suites also feature outdoor lounge areas, beach access, and private terraces, perfect for alfresco happy hours.
For midday sun or after-dinner cocktails, guests can swing by either the Sandbar or the Boat. The popular Sandbar, located on the porch of Riddles in the Sand, offers outdoor seating with a fire going in the firepit most nights and an indoor lounge area with the TV tuned to sports. The Boat is the dry-side of the swim-up pool bar, so sip on minty mojitos with panoramic ocean views.
Getting to the resort

Secluded paradises are rarely near transportation hubs, so resort guests will need to fly into Belize’s main airport and then travel on to San Pedro. You can choose to do this via a scenic 15-minute flight or 90-minute boat trip. Once in San Pedro, a Margaritaville representative will welcome and accompany you on your final leg. You are now finally at the resort dock, where, of course, a refreshing margarita awaits.
Margaritaville Beach Resort Ambergris Caye is the perfect getaway for those who are looking for an island vibe and want to get a bit off the beaten path. For scuba divers, the resort is a great base for exploring the Belize Barrier Reef, the UNESCO Great Blue Hole and Turneffe Atoll, Belize’s largest coral atoll.
For a day out of the wetsuit, guests can choose to do nothing at all, with relaxing spa treatments, sun loungers and ice-cold beers. Or dive into adventure, with a game of pickleball, a cruise in a kayak, or off-roading session in a golf buggy.
No matter what your dive trips look like—busy all the time or napping between every dive—, you won’t be disappointed with Margaritaville Beach Resort Ambergris Caye and the beautiful underwater world waiting just beyond its shores.
